Il gruppo agricolo delle donne / The women farmers' group

Nel mese di settembre 2013 le donne di Bahrgel e delle zone limitrofe hanno creato un gruppo agricolo che ha fatto molti progressi nei primi mesi di attività. Il supporto tecnico e formativo dato dall'IDVTC permetterà al gruppo agricolo di mettere in pratica nuove tecniche agricole, soprattutto durante i mesi della stagione secca.
Le donne, circa 120 in totale, sono organizzate in quattro gruppi secondo la loro area di provenienza -Bahrgel, Mediit, Panchum e Panichuer-, e coordinate da una capogruppo ognuno.
La scuola ha messo a disposizione un appezzamento di terreno all'interno della sua proprietà di circa 6500 metri quadri, che per prima cosa è stato recintato e fornito di acqua.
Sono stati poi preparati dei fazzoletti di terra secondo le indicazioni di Paul, resposabile dell'orto scolastico, sono state reperite alcune sementi locali di kudura ed è stato procurato del letame. Ad oggi, le donne hanno già cominciato a seminare e irrigare alcuni letti di terra.
La produzione agricola sarà totalmente a disposizione delle donne, sia per il proprio fabbisogno alimentare sia per la vendita nei mercati locali.

In September 2013 the women of Bahrgel and the nearby villages created a farmers' group that has progressed a lot in its first months of work. The technical and training support provided by the IDVTC will help the group put new agricultural techniques into practice, especially during the dry season.
The women, some 120 in total, are organized in four groups, according to the areas where they come from -Bahrgel, Mediit, Panchum and Panichuer-, each of which is coordinated by one group leader.
The school has made available a piece of land within the school property of some 6500 square metres, that in the first place was fenced and supplied with water.
Then the group prepared the plots of land following the advice of Paul, responsible of the school garden, found kudura seeds and went to take manure. To this day, the women have already started sowing and irrigating some of the plots.
The whole farming production will be the property of the team, who will use it both for personal consumption and for sale in the local market.

Fine dell'anno accademico / End of the school year

Giovedì 28 novembre sono finiti gli esami del terzo e ultimo trimestre all'IDVTC. La consegna delle pagelle e dei certificati di Edilizia ha avuto luogo sabato 30, giorno in cui è stato chiuso ufficialmente l'anno scolastico.

Nessuno degli alunni della scuola ha fallito né il trimestre né l'anno, ma Edilizia e Matematica continuano a essere i corsi dove gli studenti trovano più difficoltà.
I ragazzi della P6 e la P7 torneranno il 3 marzo, giorno in cui comincierà l'anno accademico 2014, mentre quelli di P8, che hanno finito il loro percorso di studi primari, faranno l'esame di stato a gennaio per poter accedere alle scuole secondarie.
Malual (preside) e Mawal (maestro d'Inglese) frequenteranno per il terzo e secondo anno rispettivamente il corso di formazione per i maestri che annualmente ha luogo a Rumbek nei mesi di gennaio e febbraio.

On Thursday 28th November the IDVTC third and last term examinations came to an end. The delivery of report cards and Masonry certificates took place on Saturday 30, the day when we officially closed the academic year.
None of the students has failed the year, although Masonry and Mathematics continue to be the subjects in which the pupils find more difficulties.
The P6 and P7 students will be back on date 3rd Mach, when the 2014 academic year will start, while those of P8, who have completed their primary level education, will take the national exam to access secondary schools in January.
Malual (the headmaster) and Mawal (the English teacher) will attend for the second and third year respectively the teachers training course that takes place in January and February in Rumbek annually.

MOCK: 100% degli alunni promossi / 100% pass rate

Oggi l’Ufficio dell’Educazione della Contea di Cueibet ci ha fatto sapere che tutti e 18 gli alunni della Primary 8 della nostra scuola hanno passato la simulazione dell’esame di stato a livello di contea, e anche con buoni voti! Di conseguenza, tutti si sono potuti iscrivere all'esame di stato per accedere alle scuole secondarie, che avrà luogo a gennaio 2014.

Today the Education Office of Cueibet County has told us that all 18 Primary 8 students of our school have passed the county level simulation of the national exam, and with good marks! Therefore, all of them have been allowed to enroll for the national examination to access secondary schools, that will take place in January 2014.

La P8 si prepara per l'esame di stato / P8 gets ready for the national examination

Questa settimana gli studenti della Primary 8, che finiranno il ciclo di educazione primaria alla fine di quest'anno scolastico, hanno fatto una simulazione dell'esame di stato che averrà all'inizio del 2014. Gli studenti che finiscono le primarie devono passare obbligatoriamente l'esame di stato se vogliono continuare il loro percorso di studi secondari.

Quest'anno l'Ufficio dell'Educazione della Contea di Cueibet ha deciso, per la prima volta, di creare una seconda simulazione a livello di contea (chiamata "screening MOCK"), che si aggiungerà alla prima, che si fa a livello di scuola ("challenging MOCK").

La simulazione a livello di contea verrà proposta a novembre e determinerà quali studenti potranno iscriversi all'esame nazionale come candidati delle proprie scuole. Quelli che falliranno dovranno ripetere la Primary 8 o iscriversi all'esame statale come privatisti.

Quest'anno sono soltanto 9 le scuole della Contea di Cueibet che offrono la Primary 8, l'ultima classe del ciclo delle primarie.

This week our Primary 8 students, who will complete their primary education at the end of this academic year, have done a simulation of the national exam that will take place at the beginning of 2014. The pupils that complete primary education must pass the national examination if they want to join secondary education.

This year the Education Office of Cueibet County has decided to create a second simulation exam that will be done at county level (called "screening MOCK"), that will be added to the first one, which is done at school level ("challenging MOCK").

The county level exam will take place in November and it will determine which students are allowed to register themselves to the state exam as candidates of their own schools. Those who will fail will be advised to repeat Primary 8 class or to register themselves to the national examination as individual candidates.

This year only 9 of the schools of Cueibet County are offering Primary 8, the last class of primary education level.

Lavori in corso / Under construction

I cambiamenti non avvengono mai all'improviso nella nostra scuola. Bisogna, invece, lasciarli lievitare mentre si lavora assieme.

Alcuni mesi fa tutti noi abbiamo cominciato a concentrare le nostre energie sul rendere più indipendenti i maestri e gli operai della scuola. Non senza difficoltà, abbiamo iniziato e portato avanti delle nuove attività che all'inizio richiedevano tanto supporto, come la creazione di nuovi registri per controllare le presenze di studenti, maestri e lavoratori, la creazione di un registro di attività agricole e di consumo del cibo, o lo svolgimento di lezioni di computer per i maestri e il logista.

I risultati sono stati veramente buoni. I sette maestri hanno scritto a computer gli esami del secondo trimestre, che sono stati consegnati a fine agosto. Paul continua a registrare giornalmente i lavori che fa nell'orto della scuola, del quale è responsabile, nel diario che ha cominciato a maggio, oltre a dirigere sempre con maggior indipendenza i lavori agricoli. Peter, il logista, non solo calcola il cibo che poi le cuoche cucinano ogni giorno, ma compila anche il modulo sul consumo del cibo e ha imparato a prepararlo a computer insieme ad altri registri. Il lavoro del logista nella scuola è uno dei lavori per cui si richiede maggiore attenzione ed autonomia. Durante i mesi scolastici, sono più di 80 le persone che pranzano nel centro e circa 60 quelle che vi cenano.

Questi segnali di un aumentato livello di indipendenza e di competenze del nostro staff si traducono in un aumento della sostenibilità della scuola, una delle sfide di maggiore importanza per qualsiasi progetto di sviluppo.

Oggi è cominciato il terzo e ultimo trimestre di quest'anno scolastico 2013, che finirà l'8 dicembre.

Changes never happen all of a sudden in the school. Instead, it is needed to let them leaven meanwhile we work together. 

Some months ago we all started to focus our energies on making the teachers and workers of the school more independent. We found many difficulties on the way, but in the end we were able to settle and manage some new activities that in the beginning needed much support, such as the creation of new attendance registers for students, teachers and workers, the creation of a register of agricultural activities and food consumption, or the establishment of a computer course both for the teachers and the logistician of the school.

The results are really good. Our seven teachers have typed the exams of the second term -that took place at the end of August- by themselves. Paul keeps on recording his work in the school garden every day, in a diary that he started in May, apart from managing the agricultural activities in a more independent way. Peter, the logistician, not only calculates the food that the cooks prepare every day and registers all the data in the food consumption form, but also he has learnt how to make this and other forms on the computer. The logistician's job is one of the jobs at the school that require more concentration and autonomy. During the school months, more than 80 people take lunch and more than 60 take supper in the centre.

This improvement on the level of independence and competences of our staff brings an improvement on the sustainability of the school, one of the most important challenges for any development project.

Today the third and last term of 2013 has started. It will end on December 8.

La fine del secondo trimestre / End of the second term

Studenti e maestri sono in vacanza da domenica scorsa dopo aver concluso gli esami del secondo trimestre. I risultati sono stati tutti positivi, merito anche del lavoro fatto dagli insegnanti, che questa volta si sono impegnati a prepararli e a stamparli a computer.

Il 16 settembre comincierà il terzo e ultimo trimestre, alla fine del quale per la prima volta nella Scuola gli studenti della Primary 8 riceveranno il certificato triennale di Edilizia.

Students and teachers are on holidays since Sunday, after having completed the second term examinations. The good marks are also the result of the effort of the teachers, that this time have improved their computer skills by typing and printing the exams themselves. 

Third term starts on 16 September. At the end of it, for the first time at the School our Primary 8 students will receive their three year Masonry certificate.

Gli esami del primo trimestre / First term examinations

Domenica scorsa abbiamo consegnato ai ragazzi le loro pagelle del primo trimestre. Siamo contenti di dirvi che nessuno ha fallito, e soprattutto che i ragazzi della Primary 6, per i quali questi sono stati i primi esami nella nostra Scuola, hanno ottenuto risultati molto buoni! Maestri e alunni sono tornati a casa per due settimane, durante le quali non solo si riposeranno, ma aiuteranno anche le loro famiglie a coltivare i propri campi. La Scuola ricomincerà le attività il prossimo 10 giugno.

Last Sunday we gave the students their 1st term report cards. We are happy to tell you that none of them has failed! Our Primary 6 pupils have performed especially well, since these have been their first examinations in our School and they have got very good results. Both the teachers and the students have gone home for two weeks. Holidays are not only a good time for resting, but also an opportunity to help cultivating their family fields. The second term will get started next 10th June.

L'impianto solare dell'IDVTC / The solar system of the IDVTC

L’elettricità è una forma di energia essenziale per la Scuola Ireneo Dud, non solo per fare le cose comuni che noi tutti siamo abituati a fare a casa nostra (cucinare, ricaricare computer e cellulari, avere la luce, usare utensili e macchinari elettrici), ma anche per azionare le pompe dei pozzi che forniscono l’acqua per bere, per fare la doccia e per innaffiare il nostro orto, soprattutto in un paese, il Sudan del Sud, dove non ci sono né infrastrutture elettriche né idriche.

Nel nostro Centro è sempre stato utilizzato un generatore con motore diesel, donato alla Scuola sin dal suo inizio. Anche se acceso per poche ore durante la giornata, il costo elevato del carburante è sempre stato uno dei maggiori problemi per quanto riguarda la sostenibilità economica ed ambientale del progetto.

Da alcuni giorni tutto è cambiato: abbiamo utlimato l’installazione di un sistema solare che è in grado di produrre abbastanza energia per tutto il Centro e per l’irrigazione dell’orto e del terreno seminativo. Il progetto è il frutto della collaborazione e del cofinanziamento di Enfinity Trade BVBA (produttore e fornitore di pannelli solari), la Coseano Impianti S.R.L. (installatrice in loco dell’intero impianto solare) e l’Associazione Sudin Onlus. L’impianto, costituito da 186 pannelli solari, arriva a produrre fino ad un massimo 43 kW giornalieri. L’elettricità raggiunge finalmente tutte le aree del compound, sia di giorno, sfruttando l’energia del sole, sia di notte, grazie alle batterie che si ricaricano durante le ore diurne.

Electricity is very necessary for the Ireneo Dud School, not only to do the common things that we are used to do at home (cooking, reading at night, recharging computers and phones…) but also to activate the water pumps of the wells that give us water for drinking, showering, cooking and watering our vegetable garden, since there are no electricity or water facilities in South Sudan. 

This work was usually done by a diesel generator donated to the Centre. Even if it was turned on few hours every day, the high cost of diesel made electricity one of the biggest problems for the economic and environmental sustainability of the project. 

Since some days everything has changed: we have finalized the installation of a solar system that is able to produce enough electricity for the whole Centre and also for irrigating. The project is the fruit of the collaboration and joint financing of Enfinity Trade BVBA (manufacturer and supplier of solar panels), Coseano Impianti S.R.L. (the photovoltaic system installer) and Sudin Onlus. The plant, formed by 186 solar panels, gives a maximum of 43 kW per day. The electricity reaches all the areas of the compound all day long, both during daily hours, when the system uses solar energy, and during night hours, thanks to the batteries that get recharged during the day.

Acqua: da privilegio a diritto / Water: from privilege to right

Nella maggior parte del Sudan del Sud l'acqua non è ancora un diritto, ma un privilegio. Quasi tutti i villaggi situati nelle zone più remote e lontane dalle strade principali non hanno accesso all'acqua corrente, e sono obbligati a raccoglierla dalle pozzanghere, a scavare pozzi manualmente e a muoversi verso il fiume durante la stagione secca. Le scarse condizioni igieniche dell'acqua non potabile sono una seria minaccia per la salute di numerose persone, soprattutto bambini, e possono causare diarrea, tifo e altre malattie.

Grazie alla disponibilità di macchinari presenti alla Scuola di Arti e Mestieri Ireneo Dud e al lavoro e alla cooperazione di tante persone, nelle ultime settimane è stato possibile portare l'acqua a tre delle comunità più bisognose del Payam di Malou-pec, distretto a cui appartiene anche Bahrgel.

La Scuola, insieme alle Suore Comboniane di Cueibet e con il contributo delle comunità di Panthony, Warguer e Ngatinga, ha realizzato tre pozzi che sono già funzionanti e forniscono acqua pulita a centinaia di persone della zona. Il ricavato da questa prima attività imprenditoriale verrà devoluto interamente al progetto della Scuola influendo positivamente sulla sostenibilità di quest'ultima.

In most parts of South Sudan water is not yet a right, but a privilege. Most of the villages that are located inside the bush and far from the main roads do not have access to running water and they are obliged to fetch it from the puddles, to dig wells manually and to move towards the river during the dry season. Diarrhea, typhoid fever and other waterborne diseases are very common, especially among children. 

Thanks to the drilling machinery available at the Ireneo Dud Vocational Training Centre and the work and cooperation of many people, in the last weeks it has been possible to bring water to three of the most needy communities in Malou-pec Payam, the district to which Bahrgel belongs.

The School, together with the Comboni Sisters of Cueibet and in collaboration with the communities of Panthony, Warguer and Ngatinga, has drilled three wells that are already serviceable and giving clean water to hundreds of people of the area. The whole contribution of this first entrepreneurial activity has been returned to the School, helping it be more sustainable.

Si comincia! / Let's get started!

A Bahrgel il primo giorno di Scuola in realtà dura più di un giorno. Gli alunni arrivano da posti diversi e molto lontani e spesso alle loro famiglie risulta difficile trovare il modo per pagare la retta scolastica. Un po' alla volta tutto si stabilizzerà mentre gli studenti arrivano, lentamente e non tutti nello stesso momento. Anche se la prima settimana di classe non è così organizzata come il resto dell'anno scolastico, è anche un buon momento per gli studenti per abituarsi al nuovo ambiente e alle regole della Scuola.

Ieri abbiamo cominciato con la registrazione degli alunni e il pagamento della retta, un processo che andrà avanti per qualche giorno. Abbiamo anche spiegato le regole di comportamento della Scuola ai ragazzi e gli abbiamo consegnato gli orari. Quando la maggior parte degli studenti saranno arrivati, inaugureremo ufficialmente l'anno scolastico e vi presenteremo tutti gli alunni che formeranno parte dell'Ireneo Dud VTC quest'anno.

Anche i ragazzi che vivono ed aiutano nel compound e che non hanno ancora completato la Primary 5 si sono registrati oggi nella Scuola Pubblica di Bahrgel. Probabilmente conoscete alcuni di loro! Makuac e Malual cominciano la P5, mentre Thijiin e Makol sono entrati nella P1. Siamo anche molto contenti che Wutcok, figlio di Mangar, abbia deciso di ritornare a Scuola (P2), e che Meen, fratello di Manyang, cominci ad andare a Scuola quest'anno frequentando la P0.

Ciben e Makou hanno finito la P5 l'anno scorso nella Scuola Pubblica di Bahrgel, e sono stati accettati all'Ireneo Dud dopo aver passato l'esame di entrata a Gennaio.

Wutcok, Malual and Thijiin, serious but happy after the first day of school!

In Bahrgel the first day of school actually lasts for more than one day. The pupils come from very far places and for their families it is often hard to find the way to pay the school fee. Little by little the situation will settle down while the students arrive, slowly and not all at a time. Though the first week of class is not as organized as the rest of the academic year, it is also a good moment for the new students to get used to the new environment and the School rules.

Yesterday we started the registration of the students and the school fee payments, a process that will take some more days. We also explained them the School rules and regulations and gave them the timetables. When most of the students will be here, we will officially inaugurate the academic year and we will be able to introduce you all the pupils that will be part of the Ireneo Dud VTC this year.

Today has also been the enrolment day for the boys that live and help in the compound and that attend Bahrgel Public Primary School, since they have not yet completed Primary 5 level. You might know some of them! Makuac and Malual are starting P5, while Thijiin and Makol are joining P1. We are also very happy that Wutcok, Mangar's son, decided to come back to School (P2), and that Meen, Manyang's brother, is starting P0 level.

Ciben and Makou completed P5 at the Public School last year and they have been accepted to join P6 in our School after passing the entrance examination that took place in January.

93 candidati / 93 candidates

Lunedì prossimo inizieranno gli esami d’ammissione all’Ireneo Dud School per il 2013. 93 è il numero di studenti provenienti da diverse scuole della contea di Cueibet che si sono registrati da noi e tra questi, purtroppo solamente 4 le ragazze. Sono ancora poche le famiglie che accettano di mandare a scuola le proprie figlie, in una zona dove spesso le ragazze sono costrette a sposarsi molto presto o a rimanere a casa a sbrigare le faccende domestiche.

Gli esami di lunedì riguarderanno due materie, Matematica e Inglese, e l’accesso alla Scuola riguarderà non solo il voto delle 2 prove, ma anche il colloquio personale e l’età dei candidati. Per via della guerra civile finita nel 2005, quasi la totalità dei ragazzi che vanno a scuola hanno un’età di molto superiore a quella che dovrebbero avere rispetto alla classe che frequentano.

Uno degli obiettivi della nostra Scuola è quello di abbassare l’età media dei ragazzi che la frequentano (alcuni studenti hanno 25 anni e frequentano ancora la quinta elementare). Ridurre l’età significa dare maggiori possibilità agli studenti più giovani di frequentare le secondarie e abbassare il rischio di abbandono per matrimoni, oltre a evitare episodi di gerarchia all'interno della stessa classe tra alunni con grosse differenza di età.



Next Monday the entry exams to join the Ireneo Dud School in 2013 will get started. 93 is the final amount of students from different parts of Cueibet County that have come to register and, unfortunately, only 4 among them are female. In this area, the families that agree to send their daughters to school are still few nowadays. It is very common that girls are obliged to marry when they are minors or to stay at home doing the housework.

There will be two exams on Monday: Mathematics and English. The access to the School will depend not only on the results of those tests but also on the personal interviews and the age of the candidates. Due to the civil war that ended in 2005, the age of most of the students of the zone is much higher than the one that corresponds to their class.

One of the aims of our School is to reduce the average age of its students (some primary 5 pupils might be 25 years old). Reducing the average age has three main purposes: increasing the chances of younger students to join secondary schools, helping reduce the risk of dropout due to marriage and preventing hierarchy episodes within the classes in which the age of the students is very diverse.

Benvenuti e bentornati / Welcome & welcome back

Il Natale è finito, il 2013 è cominciato ed è ora di riprendere il lavoro! Lunedì sono tornati a Bahrgel Stefano ed Elisa, questa volta in buona compagnia: Luisa e Bruno, due agronomi scelti dalla Facoltà di Agraria dell’Università di Udine, sono venuti all’Ireneo Dud per studiare il progetto agricolo in loco per le prossime tre settimane.

D’altra parte, ci sono tante cose da fare prima che inizi l’anno scolastico il primo marzo. A fine mese verrà fatta la selezione dei nuovi alunni della Scuola. Sono già state fatte le iscrizioni e i colloqui personali; mancano solo gli esami d’ingresso e la loro valutazione, ai cui parteciperano tre dei maestri. Malual (il preside della Scuola e professore di Matematica) e Mawual (professore d’Inglese) sono impegnati in un training per i maestri a Rumbek che durerà due mesi; un’opportunità per migliorare sia la loro preparazione sia di conseguenza la qualità dell’insegnamento nella Scuola.

Christmastime is over, 2013 has just started and it’s time to restart working! On Monday Stefano and Elisa came back to Bahrgel, this time in company: Luisa and Bruno, two agronomists chosen by the Facoltà di Agraria of the University of Udine, will spend the next three weeks studying the agricultural project in the field.

On the other hand, there are many things to set up before the new academic year starts on the first of March. We have already done the inscriptions and the personal interviews, while at the end of this month the incoming students will take the entry exams. The final selection will take place at the beginning of February. Three teachers will take part in the process. Malual (the headmaster of the School and Mathematics teacher) and Mawual (English teacher) are now attending a teaching training in Rumbek that will last for two months. It is a great opportunity that will benefit both themselves and the School.
